happy hour: blood orange bubbly
Hello! Today we're back from our holiday break to share a bright and bubbly little cocktail with you. When blood oranges are in season, I can't resist grabbing a few every time I'm at the grocery store. They're so beautiful and delicious that I try to enjoy them as much as possible while they're available. Since New Years has put me on a bit of a bubbly kick, I thought they'd be perfect paired with a dry sparkling wine and some pomegranate juice.
blood orange bubbly (makes one)
4 ounces pomegranate juice
2 ounces blood orange juice
1 ounce blood orange simple syrup (recipe follows)
4 ounces dry sparkling wine
Add pomegranate and blood orange juices and simple syrup to a stemless wine glass or short tumbler and stir. Top with sparkling wine and enjoy!
blood orange simple syrup
1 cup water
1 cup sugar
zest and juice of one blood orange
In a small saucepan, stir together the water and sugar over medium heat until the sugar dissolves. Add the zest and juice. Once mixture begins to boil, remove from heat and allow to steep for 10 minutes. Strain out the solids and store the syrup in an airtight container in the fridge.
Note: You will need one orange for the simple syrup and one orange for every two drinks. Chill the wine and pomegranate juice before mixing.
