happy hour: citrus-ginger bourbon soda


Louisville may be right in the middle of bourbon country, but I have to admit I wouldn't touch the stuff until a few months ago.  Bourbon still may not be the first liquor I reach for, but mixed with some homemade citrus-infused simple syrup and some bubbles, I can't resist it!

citrus-ginger bourbon soda

1 ounce citrus-ginger simple syrup (recipe follows)
2 ounces bourbon
club soda

In a highball or Collins glass, mix together simple syrup and bourbon.  Add ice and fill the glass with club soda.  Garnish with a slice of lemon or lime and enjoy!

citrus-ginger simple syrup

zest and juice of 1 lemon
zest of 1 lime
5" piece of ginger root, peeled and sliced
1 cup sugar
1 cup water

In a small saucepan, stir together the water and sugar over medium heat until the sugar dissolves.  Add the zest, juice, and ginger.  Once mixture begins to boil, remove from heat and allow to steep for 10 minutes.  Strain out the solids and store the syrup in an airtight container in the fridge.
